On the journey back, the three of them stayed quiet, their minds filled with thoughts from what they had just witnessed. Ben leaned back in his seat, studying the star he had received from the kid before they left.
Tony looked at the star in Ben’s hand and gently took it from him. He couldn’t help but notice how well the star was kept, as if it held great importance. Ben couldn’t help but smile at the innocent expression on the kid’s face every time he looked at the star. The car fell into a tense silence.
Thalia glanced at them through the rearview mirror and gave a warm smile. “Why do you both seem down?” she asked. Tony let out a sigh and handed the star back to Ben. “It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?”
Thalia’s smile remained, but her eyes grew solemn. “When you travel the world and see every corner, you’ll realize that many people are struggling to survive in unexpected places. That’s just how the world works.” Her words sank in, and Ben turned to gaze out of the window.
They passed countless destroyed buildings and ruins, a reminder of the once thriving land. Tony looked at Ben and spoke up. “Alright, Thalia said this is just the beginning. Are we going to let every similar situation bring us down?”
Ben nodded, understanding Tony’s point. “Got it.”
Thalia grinned as she saw them regain their cheerfulness. Suddenly, she remembered something and asked, “By the way, do you know what Theodore did in the Midnight Fang pack?”
Tony and Ben exchanged glances. Ben hesitated slightly before answering, “I think he was like me… a hacker.” Thalia was surprised. “Like you? A hacker?”
Tony nodded. “That’s right, I believe so.” Thalia raised an eyebrow. “Was he good at it?”
Tony shrugged. “I’m not sure. The internet wasn’t as developed back then. My sister, Nelly, mentioned that our grandfather was skilled with computers, but I never got to meet him. Nelly never specifically said he was a hacker, so it’s just a guess.”
Thalia nodded, deep in thought. It made sense. Nelly was young when Theodore passed away and back then, not many people knew about the internet unless they were geniuses.
Thalia couldn’t hide her astonishment at how many geniuses were in this family. It would be incredible if they all came together.
Excitedly, Thalia exclaimed, “So you inherited your skills from your granddad? It skipped a generation and went to you!” Tony was left speechless.
In reality, it didn’t skip a generation. Nelly had the skills too, and she passed them down to me.
But Tony couldn’t reveal that, so he simply nodded tentatively. “I guess so.”
Thalia’s excitement grew. “You guess so? No, it must be true!” She praised Tony, “I always wondered how you could be such a genius at such a young age. Now I know it’s in your genes. By the way, what did your grandma do?”
Her question caught both boys off guard. Tony and Ben exchanged glances, realizing they had never asked Nelly about her occupation. Seeing their reaction, Thalia asked, “You don’t know?”
Tony shook his head. “We knew our granddad and grandma died in a tragic way. Nelly was deeply affected by their deaths, so she rarely spoke about them. We never asked to avoid causing her more pain.”
Suddenly, Thalia realized she shouldn’t have been so excited. She understood that these memories could be painful for young Nelly.
Quickly, Thalia apologized. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up any painful memories. I thought if the granddad was talented, maybe the grandma was too. Your family’s genes are incredible, so maybe Ben inherited her skills.”
Hearing those words, Tony glanced at Ben and chuckled. “Perhaps you’re right.” Then he turned to Thalia and reassured her, “No need to apologize. I know you didn’t mean any harm.”
Ben looked at him with confusion written all over his face. Thalia, through the rearview mirror, seemed just as baffled. “Why do you think that?” Ben asked, genuinely curious.
“After suffering a big loss, the guys from Midnight Fang Pack just left without doing anything. And Nelly left too,” Tony explained.
“You think they took Nelly with them?” Ben questioned. “Hasn’t Nelly been in touch with you?”
“There are different ways they could have taken her. I don’t think they kidnapped her, though. They couldn’t do that in our territory. Maybe they tricked her,” Tony said darkly. Ben found his words reasonable.
Thalia chimed in, puzzled. “But why would they take Nelly with them?”
Taken aback, Tony furrowed his brow. She was right, why would they take Nelly? Did they find out her true identity? No, he didn’t think so. It was unlikely but still possible.
Uncertain, Tony felt a sense of urgency building up inside him.
After thinking for a while, Ben slowly spoke up. “Did they do it because Nelly was investigating Granddad’s death? Or maybe it’s just a simple revenge?”
“Revenge?” Thalia scrunched up her face in confusion.
Turning to her, Ben explained, “We took their goods on our territory, but Midnight Fang Pack probably thought it was Daddy who took them. So they might be seeking revenge against Daddy.”
“That could make sense, but isn’t it too complicated? If they wanted revenge, they could have just killed Nelly,” Thalia countered.
“Maybe they didn’t get a chance to,” Ben replied.
Thalia wasn’t convinced. “You really think those outlaws couldn’t find a chance to kill her?” Tony and Ben remained silent.
Moonwalk Pack was under Alpha Kilian’s territory, making it difficult to take action. However, they could still find a way if they tried hard enough.
“Unless they’re after something else,” Thalia murmured, deep in thought. Tony and Ben exchanged guilty looks.
Was it because of that?
“Let’s stop thinking about it for now and try to contact Nelly. We need to inform her about all this,” Ben suggested.
Tony nodded and took out his phone to give Nelly a call. Unfortunately, the call didn’t go through. “Send her a text instead. She’ll definitely see it,” Ben advised.
Tony agreed.
Nelly knew they were there, so she wouldn’t relax until they left. Even if she refused to answer her phone, she would read their text.Content provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
With that in mind, Tony typed out a text explaining what they had discovered and sent it to Nelly.
As he stared at the screen, hoping for a reply, none came.
A crease formed on Tony’s forehead. “No reply yet?” Ben asked.
Tony shook his head in response.
“Nelly probably doesn’t want to contact us because she’s worried about getting us involved,” Ben tried to comfort him.
“That’s just how she is. She always takes everything on herself,” Tony said sadly, feeling a pang of empathy for her.
“Yeah,” Thalia chimed in. Her eyes focused on the road as she drove. This time, she became the center of attention as the two boys looked at her.
“All mothers love their children. She would risk her life to protect you,” Thalia added, sighing quietly.
Suddenly, a memory flashed through her mind. A woman covered in blood, using her hands to shield Thalia’s eyes. “Lia, you have to survive. Remember, I love you. I will love you forever. I can’t stay by your side to protect you, but I can be your guardian angel in another way. So stay strong and live a good life.”
Memories were painful because they didn’t fade away; they only became more vivid with time. Over the years, Thalia had come to understand just how powerless her mother had been. Tears threatened to fall from her eyes.
Grabbing her sunglasses and putting them on, she hid her tears from view.
In the backseat, Tony and Ben were oblivious to her changing emotions. They pondered her words and finally said, “We can sacrifice for Nelly, just like she sacrifices for us!”
Hearing their words, Thalia smirked. “Then you’ll have to grow up quickly and become strong and capable men. That way, you can keep your promise and protect her.”
For the first time, Tony didn’t argue with her. He nodded firmly, growing more determined to become stronger.
