22 Reflections and Realizations
Exhausted after a long half–day at the hospital, Alex decided against returning to the office, opting to rest at home Instead. As he lay in bed, his thoughts inevitably drifted to Emma and the myriad ways she had meticulously managed his life, ensuring his comfort and well–being. The realization that her absence had left a significant vold in his daily routine was inescapable.
Tossing and turning, Alex wrestled with memories of their intimate moments, each recollection tightening the knot of pain in his chest. He knew that Emma’s decision to divorce was final, loving no room for reconciliation. Resigned, he forced himself to set aside these thoughts for the night, eventually finding rest.
The next morning, Alex returned to work early, facing a packed schedule compounded by yesterday’s unattended tasks. Around mid–morning, his assistant Collins announced the arrival of a client, Partner Credly.
The meeting progressed smoothly until Credly looked around, seemingly searching for someone. On being asked, he expressed surprise at Emma’s absence. “I was expecting to see Mrs. Alex here. She’s always been instrumental in our collaborations,” Credly said, a note of admiration in his voice.
Alex listened, stunned, as Credly extolled Emma’s professional prowess and her significant contributions to their business dealings. Credly’s words illuminated how much of Alex’s success was intertwined with Emma’s silent efforts, a realization that hit him with a mix of guilt and newfound
respect.
When Credly inquired about Emma’s whereabouts, Alex hesitated before replying, “She was my wife. We’ve recently divorced.”
Credly’s response was unexpected. He laughed off any concerns about the partnership’s continuity, assuring Alex that while Emma’s role had been crucial initially, his respect for Alex’s talents was the primary reason for their sustained collaboration.
As the meeting wrapped up, Credly paused, meeting Alex’s gaze. “If there’s no chance of reconciliation with Emma, I’d like to express my interest in courting her. She’s truly remarkable.”
The declaration struck Alex profoundly. Credly’s admiration for Emma, so evident and genuine, contrasted sharply with Alex’s own past negligence.
“L… If she ever considers coming back, it won’t be anytime soon,” Alex managed to say, his voice betraying a mix of regret and resignation.
Credly nodded, pleased. “I appreciate your honesty. I’ll proceed with my intentions, then.”
Left alone after Credly’s departure, Alex stood motionless, his emotions in turmoil. Beside him, Collins could only speculate on the tumult of thoughts running through his boss’s mind.
The meeting had revealed not only the extent of Emma’s unseen influence but also the possibility of

her moving on with someone who recognized her value. For Alex, it was a painful acknowledgment of the consequences of his past actions and the potential loss of a future with the woman he was only now beginning to truly appreciate.
