Chapter 1265
Mrs. Perez shot a sharp look at her husband, clearly annoyed, and jabbed him with her elbow. "Really? You're acting like you've never seen whiskey before. Didn't one of your old classmates send you a bottle just last year?" She wanted to imply that the liquor wasn't anything special and to stop behaving as though he had been bought off.
Mr. Perez paused for a moment, then corrected her seriously, "This is aged, top-tier whiskey. It's different."
Mrs. Perez's face darkened, but after seeing his reaction, he finally clammed up, though somewhat reluctantly.
After this brief exchange, Mrs. Perez couldn't exactly demand that Lydia take her gifts back. She coughed lightly, trying to regain her composure.
"Well, we'll accept these, but only because he doesn't have many hobbies besides this," she said, casting Lydia a pointed glance, her lips curling into a faint, sarcastic smile. "You really did your homework."
Lydia's expression stiffened, feeling the sting of her kindness being twisted into something manipulative.
She clenched her hands slightly and said, "I figured since I was coming over, it was only polite to find out what you like."
Mrs. Perez let out a cold chuckle.
Perhaps the gifts hit the right note for Mr. Perez, as he, clearly uncomfortable with his wife's treatment of Lydia, interjected, "Alright, enough. They're already married. You don't have to like it, but it's a fact. She's come here in good faith. Let's not make this any harder." Mrs. Perez, visibly irritated, snapped, "Whose side are you on?"
Reluctantly, Mr. Perez fell silent, clearly used to avoiding conflict with his wife.
Still, his words had some impact. Mrs. Perez didn't kick Lydia out and even allowed her to stay for dinner, though that was as far as her kindness extended.
After dinner, Mrs. Perez escorted Lydia to the door. As Lydia was about to leave, she couldn't help but deliver one last jab. "In the future, unless there's something urgent, it would be best if you didn't come by. We really can't keep hosting someone like you, Miss Lydia." With that, the door slammed shut.
Despite this treatment, Lydia wasn't ready to give up. She tried visiting a few more times but never managed to see Mr. or Mrs. Perez again. Each rejection chipped away at her spirits, leaving her feeling more and more disheartened.
Eventually, Quincy noticed her growing melancholy. He didn't pry, but he did his own digging and soon discovered what had been bothering her.
One day, as Lydia approached Quincy's office to drop off some documents, she overheard his voice from inside, sounding uncharacteristically tense.

"Quincy! Why are you being so stubborn? What's so great about Lydia? She's probably running

That comment set Quincy's anger ablaze. His eyes darkened, and the tension in his voice was palpable.
"What if I told you Lydia and I are already expecting a child?"
He glanced at the still-active call screen and ended it without another word.
"What? Wait, what do you mean? Are you saying "
Beep... beep... beep.
As soon as Quincy hung up, Mrs. Perez immediately called back.
He ignored every call, tossing his phone aside and switching it to "Do Not Disturb."
Nothing she did could break through his resolve.
