Fated is overrated

Chapter 190

Chris POV

The last few years have been odd, to say the least. My high school friends club isn't what it used to be. In fact, I wonder whether they have ever been the right friends for me. Looking at Ashton and his behavior, I can't seem to stomach the person he has become. Or has always been, and I was just too blind to see it. And, admittedly, I was a bad person myself at some point. I still get stomach pains when I think of how I treated Lola the last night she was here.

Looking back at our friendship when we were younger, and the friendships I have formed after her, I think it is safe to say she was the only true friend I have ever had. I treated her like sh*t, and I will have to live with that for the rest of my life from now on. She did attend my Alpha ceremony, though. Although I am unsure whether she attended it for me, or out of her official duties as the Queen.

It still feels so odd to call her that. She and I used to play in the mud together as children. She did make a point to warn me at my Alpha ceremony, that I am to treat my pack members right. What she meant, of course, was to never repeat my bad actions from before she left. And she made it a point to ensure nobody gets bullied in high school, which I will be sure to look into.

As the official Queen and Kings, they also gave a speech at my ceremony, which is customary. What never used to be customary, is for the Queen to mention that anyone encountering mistreatment may contact her directly. Perhaps she relays this message everywhere, I'm not quite sure.

I understand though. Even though Lola seemed relatively OK with me, the Kings were looking at me as if they would like to drink my blood. I can't blame them, I guess.

But, I am a changed man. I know people say that a lot, but I really do see the error of my ways. I have had countless therapy sessions by now. And I am deeply ashamed of my past.

Perhaps this is also the reason the moon goddess hasn't blessed me with a fated mate yet, if I will ever meet her at all. Ashton has taken a chosen one, but he slanders her name daily by continuing to cheat on her. Jeremy seemed to have turned the page after he found his fated mate, and he got his sh*t together.

Melissa... Don't get me started on that train wreck. We weren't exactly friends anymore ever since she tried to attack Lola when we ran into her with her brother at the mall, but she has taken an even more drastic turn after Jason found his fated mate.

She was only with Jason for lack of anything better, so when he found his fated mate and left her instead of her finding the Alpha she so desired, she completely derailed. She wasn't exactly devout to begin with, but now she basically hits on everything that moves and will take her.

And I almost forgot! She did find her second chance fated mate at one point. But, brace yourself, he was an omega from a neighboring pack.

And in Melissa's eyes, not good enough for her. If you would believe that. The man was distraught at first, but when I explained Melissa's reputation to him and convinced him he dodged a bullet, he was relieved in the end. Poor guy.

Speaking of Jason, we completely lost touch after he left to the dragon kingdom. I don't have any contact with him, Lola or Nadia at all anymore, unfortunately.

My wolf Cezar did come back to me, after I started making an effort to clean up my act. Thank god, because what kind of Alpha would I have been without my wolf.

My dad retired after I took over the position 2 years ago, and he has been enjoying life. He even found love again! I was a bit hesitant at first, but now I am so happy for him, he totally deserves this. Hi girlfriend is really sweet too. He has been nagging me about taking a chosen mate, though.

Which I flat out refuse to do. I will hold out for my fated mate, if she even exists. And if she doesn't, so be it. Then it must be what the moon goddess has intended for me. I do have to admit it gets really lonely, when I am not completely swamped with pack duties. Which, (un)luckily for me, doesn't happen very often. Another downside to not having a Luna - I have to take on those duties myself as well.

Can you even believe that my father suggested Melissa to me? Obviously, he is unaware of her reputation. I understand where it was coming from though, as Melissa is one of the few around my age who are unmated as of now. And perhaps I deserve a mate like her. "Alpha, do you need me to prepare anything for tomorrow's meeting?" I almost flinch at the voice of my secretary entering my ears, as I was so lost in thoughts. Many paragraphs are missing. Read the complete book on J o=b n-l b. c (o) m. I have a meeting with a neighboring pack tomorrow, regarding the increasing number of rogues entering our pack lands.

We have also sent an official report to the royals (Lola and her mates), as we are required to do in such cases. We have no idea where the rogues are all coming from or why they are entering our lands all of a sudden, but the increase is alarming.

So, tomorrow we will discuss our strategy on how to protect both our borders. "No, thank you, Aila" I reply curtly, to which she nods. "Do you need anything else, Alpha?".Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.

"No, you can go home to your mate and enjoy the evening" I offer a small appreciative smile. I still need to do tons of work though, before I can lay my head to rest.

Cezar is pacing around restlessly in my mind, which is very unlike him. 'You OK, buddy?'. 'Yeah. I don't know why, but I feel a bit restless. Like something is going to happen tomorrow'.
