Chapter 424 For Duty
Chapter 424 For Duty
Rachel didn't respond. Instead, she picked the thermos bottle and ate up the soup in one gulp. After glaring at him, she sprinted out of the room.
She had assumed this would happen just once. But he continued to behave in this manner in the coming days. Not caring about her work or condition, he called her to the hospital for half an hour every day. It seemed like he wished to go on doing this forever.
Rachel tried to refuse him on several occasions. She brought up her work and health condition. But he wouldn't take no for an answer, bringing up his threat.
Feeling defeated, she obeyed his whims. However, today, just when she was about to leave work, the director of the executive department called her. She put two folders on Rachel's desk and asked, "Rachel, are you free now? I have to hand in these materials before I get off work. Since I have other materials to deal with, I was hoping you could give me a hand."
After thinking for a while, Rachel sat down again and said, "Director, I'm pregnant now. I am not as fast as I used to be. These materials may not be ready anytime soon."
"It doesn't matter. I'll ask two more people to deal with it. Just try to do as much as you can. No pressure!"
"Okay."
Rachel thought that perhaps she could use this as an excuse and skip visiting Jack.
Moreover, she disliked the taste of the soup he gave her. It might be healthy, but she only had it because he was forcing her to. 'This would be a nice break from the soup, ' she thought to herself.
After the director left, Rachel took out her phone and dialed Jack's number. She said in a low voice, "I am overloaded with work today. I don't have time to go to the you."
Jack frowned and suggested, "Why not? I am in no hurry. You can come here after you finish your work."
Without any hesitation, Rachel said, "I'll work overtime. When I'm done with it, it might be a bit later than your visiting hours."
Of course, Jack knew that she didn't want to come. Every time she came, she had an indifferent look etched on her face. However, seeing her every day filled him in with peace. Even if she sat in silence, it made him quite happy. He couldn't go a day without seeing her.
After thinking for a while, he said, "In that case, I don't mind bringing you the soup. Also, my hospital in quite close to yours. I can walk." "No way!" Closing her eyes, Rachel tried to calm herself down, but she couldn't help cursing this man for putting her in this situation. She said quickly, "I'll be there after work. Don't bother yourself."
Then she hung up the phone.
Rachel couldn't figure out why Jack was so persistent. 'What does he gain by watching me eat his soup?' she thought with exasperation.
He didn't have to put her in this situation.
Putting away her clouded thoughts, Rachel somehow calmed down and began to deal with the documents at hand. She had assumed it would be difficult. However, the documents she needed to sort out were from the cardiology department where she used to work. With her expertise, she managed to handle it smoothly and finished it an hour earlier.
With a sigh, she went to the director's office. She noticed the lady was busily typing on the keyboard, and she seemed a bit nervous.
Putting the document on the table, she whispered, "Director, I have dealt with all the documents here."
Hearing her voice, the director raised her head, adjusted the glasses on the bridge of her nose, and said with a smile, "Thank you for your hard work, Rachel. Since we have more time, how about you help me deal with some more documents?" Rachel was stunned. She didn't expect that the director would make another unreasonable demand.
The director stood up, turned around and began to clean up the documents on the cabinet. When she was about to pass the new documents to Rachel, she refused. In a firm voice, she said, "Director, I have something important to deal with. It isn't fair for you to make me do your share of work."
The director's face froze. Under her breath, she muttered, 'Why is she behaving so rudely?' However, on the surface, she feigned an awkward smile and said, "It's okay. I can do it myself then."
"Thank you. In that case, I will leave," Rachel said politely before she left the office. There was a sound of something smashing behind her. The director had thrown the documents that Rachel had laid down on the table. 'Not my business, ' Rachel said to herself, shrugging away these thoughts.
After taking a bit of rest in the office, Rachel decided to meet Jack. Getting out of the taxi, she made her way to his ward. Inside, he was lying in the bed and had his eyes closed. He looked much better than he did yesterday.
Even though she wouldn't admit this to anyone, there was a part of her that was happy to come here. It gave her an insight into his health. She could see him every day and make out if he was recovering well. As for his threat, she knew he would never go through with it. He was just scaring her.
She lowered her eyes to hide her concern and called his name.
It turned out Jack wasn't sleeping. He was merely resting and waiting for her. Her presence brought a glint in his eyes. Seeing her standing at the door with her big tummy, he couldn't help but feel elated. However, the emotionless look on her subdued his excitement. He wished she would smile.
Looking at his watch, he said, "Why are you so late?"
"Traffic jam," she said. As if she was here for duty, her hands instantly went on the thermos bottle kept in the cabinet. After opening it, she poured it in a bowl and finished it up.
She put down the bowl, took a tissue to wipe her mouth and said firmly, "It's done. Can I go back now?"
She had asked his permission just for the sake of formality. She turned out without even giving him a chance to reply.
However, Jack suddenly grabbed her wrist and said, "Are you so eager to leave?" His face was creased with a frown.
Rachel replied truthfully, "Yes, I am."
"Where are you going?" "Home. Where else will I go?"
He didn't relax his grip on her wrist and the heat from his body passed onto her. Rachel turned her face away from him and tried to draw her hand back. Seeing that he wasn't letting her go, she asked coldly, "You don't have anything to say, do you? Let me go."
"I do have something to say," replied Jack. He got out of bed and walked towards the heat preservation cabinet beside the sofa. He opened it and took out three overlapping food boxes. "What they sent tonight is not my favorite. Could you help me with it?"
Rachel frowned slightly. "I just had soup, so I am in no condition to eat more. Besides, Julie has prepared dinner. I don't want that food to be wasted. Enjoy yourself."
Before she could leave, a voice suddenly came from the door. "Jack."
Turning around, Rachel saw Scarlett standing at the door with one hand on the door frame and the other holding her bag. Her eyes were constantly moving back and forth between the two of them. The expression on her face hinted both anger and disbelief.
This reminded her of the dream she had last time. But the reality was a bit different from the dream.
Rachel had little interest in standing and listening to the two of them. She looked away and said coldly, "Take your time. I'm leaving now."
Scarlett took a step aside and watched Rachel leave. The mere sight of that lady curdled her blood. Blue veins stood out on her fingers.
Looking at Rachel's receding figure, Jack turned to Scarlett. His cold eyes suddenly became as sharp as a knife. "Who asked you to come here?"
The look in his eyes made Scarlett a little scared. She licked her lower lip and said, "I... I left something behind so I came back to take it."
As she spoke, she walked up and took out the earring from the crack of the sofa. She said softly, "I found an earring missing. It is my favorite, so I came back to take it."
Jack walked slowly to the window and stared out of it, as if Scarlett's presence made no difference to him.
Biting her lips, Scarlett's eyes gradually became fierce. In truth, she hadn't accidentally dropped the earring here. She deliberately put it here so that she could find an excuse to come again.
This noon, when she was here, she overheard two young nurses' conversation. Jack's name was mentioned so she paid attention to it.
The first lady said excitedly, "I wonder if Jack Fu, who lives in the VIP room, is married. I once read a news article about his wedding. Unfortunately, it didn't take place. Does this mean we still have a chance?"
The other one raised her hand and lightly hit her forehead. "Wake up. It's not your turn and it will never be."
"Excuse me? We are all single. Am I not allowed to dream?" Text content © NôvelDrama.Org.
"No, you aren't allowed to pursue such unreasonable dreams. Besides, I suspect that the news might be fake. Haven't you seen a woman come here every day? She is pregnant. Every time she comes, I see his face lighting up. I am guessing she must be his wife."
Hearing the gossip, Scarlett's eyes turned red with rage. She had no knowledge of the fact that Rachel used to come here every day. Had the two of them gotten back together?
Wanting to find out what was going on, she decided to stay back. Sitting in the coffee shop opposite to the hospital, she waited for Rachel's arrival. Once she spotted Rachel getting out of the taxi, she followed her to his ward.
And now, Rachel left the ward. Scarlett had successfully planted suspicion in Rachel's heart. Presently, Rachel felt a lump in her throat.
Every day, Rachel would tell herself that their relationship had come to an end. There was nothing left. Once the baby would come out, their separation would become official. Her brain told her that Jack's love life was none of her concern. But her stupid heart wouldn't listen. The mere sight of Scarlett in Jack's ward wounded her heart. With a sigh, she tried to stop thinking about them.
In this helpless state, she continued to walk.
Passing through the sidewalk at the gate of the hospital, Rachel waited to hail a taxi. Something caught her attention. The child who was walking towards her with his head down seemed familiar. He seemed to be Jimmy's son. When he got closer, she tentatively called out his name.
The little boy stopped and looked up, tear streaking down his face.
When he saw her, he felt very aggrieved. He ran up to her, opened his arms and held her tightly. Through his sobs, he uttered, "Auntie..."
Rachel rubbed his head and asked with concern, "What's wrong? Why are you crying?"
Although he was just a primary school student, he behaved more mature than his age. Perhaps it had something to do with his family. Rachel always felt that he was more sensible and mature than other kids.
Even though she had no idea why he was sad, she felt sorry for him. "Tell me, why are you crying?" she asked once again. Author's note
