My Toyboy 84
Cynthia frowned and asked, “You said Jonathan won’t let you go back?”
Filip was silent for a moment. He replied. “He is probably worried that I would pester you.”
Cynthia’s expression remained calm and undisturbed. “You should go back for a check–up. If anything happens, I’ll explain it to him,” she said.
Zeke, standing nearby, added, “Ms. Jones, we all know you are Mr. Bennett’s girlfriend. Could you ask him for leave first? Otherwise, Mr. Yates won’t be at ease.”
Cynthia glanced at Filip’s pale face. She eventually picked up her phone and dialed a number.
The other end answered, sounding slightly surprised. “Why are you calling me all of a sudden?”
Cynthia said. “I have something to tell you. I’m at Paradise Resort right now, Filip got injured, and I want to ask for leave on his behalf so he can go back to the city hospital for treatment.”
Even without Jonathan speaking. Cynthia could feel the atmosphere on the other side of the call suddenly turn heavy.
After a few seconds, Jonathan said coldly. “He’s injured, and you’re the one asking for leave for him?”
Cynthia explained calmly, I came here today for an interview. A crane’s load fell, and Filip saved me.”
A cold chuckle came from Jonathan’s end. “You two just had a fallout yesterday, and today, he’s a hero saving a damsel in danger? Are you sure this isn’t some pre–arranged ploy of his?” he said.
Cynthia paused, glancing at Filip sitting on the chair, his face ashen. “No, it was an accident,” she said.
Cynthia had doubted it herself but dismissed the thought quickly. The risk was too high. Intentionally having something fall from that height would have too many uncontrollable variables, possibly leading to fatalities.
Besides, Cynthia knew that while Filip could be foolish, he wasn’t scheming. He was arrogant, insecure, and proud, but deep down, he was simple–minded. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been led around by Lilian for so many years.
Most importantly, Filip didn’t even know she’d come for the interview that day. His shock and surprise upon seeing her weren’t faked.
Jonathan’s voice carried a hint of suppressed anger. He asked, “How can you be so sure?”
Cynthia answered almost without hesitation, “Because I know him.”
Filip was also looking at Cynthia, with a hint of caution in his eyes. In fact, he could vaguely hear part of their conversation
The crane accident indeed wasn’t deliberate. When he saw a wooden plank falling rapidly from the sky, he rushed over without even thinking. Upon regaining consciousness, he felt fortunate that it hadn’t killed him. He suddenly felt that that might have been an opportunity from heaven.
In that moment of shielding Cynthia, he fully realized his feelings for her. He loved her, even more than he had thought. He couldn’t just let Cynthia go, no matter her current relationship with Jonathan. He had his cards to play, too. The bond they had formed growing up together–more than 20 years of feelings–couldn’t be severed so easily.
Like right then, the words Cynthia had easily spoken-“I know him–were proof of their 20–year relationship.
Cynthia sighed and walked out of the infirmary. Her voice carried a tinge of helplessness. “Jonathan, me asking for leave for him doesn’t mean there’s anything between us, nor does it mean anything will happen in the future. I’ve said it long ago–1 won’t rekindle an old flame. Filip, to me, is just a familiar stranger. You don’t have to target him because of me.”
“How am I targeting him?” Jonathan asked.
E
“You made him, a project manager, live and eat with the worker on–site, without permission to leave–that’s a bit much.” Cynthia replied.
Jonathan chuckled coldly, even more so than before. He asked, “He complained to you? What else did he say?” Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
Cynthia’s voice also turned colder. She said, “Nothing else. Frankly, I don’t want to meddle in what you do. I just hope you don’t bring personal feelings into this. The Paradise Resort, project is too big to be tainted by personal grudges.”
Cynthia was clear–headed. She never intended to rekindle anything with Filip. But with Jonathan, after spending so much time together, she indeed felt a bit lost. His possessiveness was too strong. Despite their explicit boundaries, he constantly overstepped. If things continued that way, something would go wrong eventually,
Jonathan sneered and said, “You’re asking for a leave, right? Fine, I’ll send someone over.”
He
hung up abruptly.
Less than half an hour later, Jonathan’s people arrived. He had even sent a helicopter. It was more efficient. Driving would have taken at least two hours, while the helicopter got them to Roncrity in less than thirty minutes.
Filip was taken to Peace Hospital. After an examination, they found a lung contusion. Thankfully, they arrived in time, or surgery might have been needed.
Cynthia arranged the hospital stay for Filip. Two hours later, he was already in a hospital gown, lying in a VIP ward
Having taken care of everything, Cynthia said, “Rest well and focus on recovery. Don’t think too much. We’ll talk once you’re
better.
Filip lay on the bed, looking at her, and softly called her name. “Cynthia…
Cynthia frowned and said, “Filip, I’m grateful you saved me, but this won’t change anything between us. Don’t get your hopes up, or you’ll end up disappointed.”
Filip’s eyes darkened. She seemed to be able to see right through him. Feeling awkward, he changed the subject. “Don’t tell my parents about my injury. I don’t want them to worry.”
“I’ll find a caregiver for you,” Cynthia replied calmly.
Disappointment flashed across Filip’s face. He only wished she would come to see him every day.
“Rest well, I’ll be leaving now,” Cynthia said.
She was about to leave through the doorway when Filip called out to her. “Will you come tomorrow?”
Cynthia paused and said, “Sorry. I probably won’t have time in the coming days.”
She understood his feelings, but she didn’t want to get entangled further just because of the gratitude she owed him.
Leaving the hospital, she ran into Jonathan in the hallway. He didn’t look happy–asif he was brooding. He spoke first, however. “How is he?”
“He has a lung contusion and needs hospitalization, Cynthia replied.
Jonathan was silent for a moment, then sneered. “Quite the costly effort.
Cynthia glanced at him and said. “Can you not be so childish?”
Jonathan stared at the woman in front of him. She was still dressed in her professional attire. Though she was stunningly
beautiful, her demeanor when serious was exceptionally cold and intimidating.
Jonathan knew it was unlikely that Filip had staged it, but the fact remained–it had brought them, who had previously cur ties, back together. Just the thought of it made him inexplicably angry.
Still, he knew that Cynthia had no patience for him at all. She always wanted to draw a line between them, even in the most emotional moments.
