Chapter 40 The Formidable Man
There was a night light on in the hospital ward. The light was dim and gloomy. Elijah made sure that Freya was asleep before closing the door and walking to the bedside. He lowered his head.
In the past few days, her face had regained some color. Her cheeks were smooth and delicate like a jade, her rosy lips were vibrant and alluring, and her black hair was casually scattered with a strand falling on her brow, adding a touch of seductive charm.
Elijah couldn’t help but reach out his hand and touch her cheek. As his fingertips touched her face, delicate sensation spread. His brow furrowed. Perhaps feeling itchy, Freya turned her head and fidgeted. Elijah quickly withdrew his hand.
“Um…”
Freya turned over and continued to sleep on her side, with her back facing him. When she turned over, the blanket rolled up. Elijah covered her with the blanket and then lay down next to her in a narrow space, lying on his side facing her with his face buried in the back of her neck, holding her through the blanket as they slept.
The night was dark. There was a hint of warmth in the indoor lighting.
In the morning, Freya woke up to find that Elijah had already left without her noticing.
She didn’t realize at all that someone had come last night.
At eight o’clock, Linda came to deliver the food and also bought a lot of fruits.
After dinner, she ate some fruit and sat on the sofa by the window, basking in the sun.
The door suddenly knocked.
Before Freya could speak, the door was pushed open.
“Freya!” Leo Stone said simply and directly, “You go ask Elijah for mercy.”
He had already figured out the car accident in these days. Zane Stone hit Elijah Silverton’s car that day, and no one was killed or injured, except for Xander who was slightly injured. After treatment, he was much better now. But Elijah insisted on holding someone accountable.
Zane Stone did not have a driver’s license and as an adult, he was liable under the law. He was driving without a license. There was surveillance on that section of the road at the time, and the photos were clearly taken. Not only was Zane Stone responsible, but he also ran away afterward. Hit-and-run crime upgraded to first degree.
Freya was nestled on the sofa, her bright eyes open and her thick eyelashes fluttering.
“Dad, I don’t know what you are talking about, and why should I ask Elijah for mercy?”
She clearly knew what Leo Stone was talking about in her heart. However, she pretended to know nothing on purpose.
“Your younger brother drove your car without permission and hit Elijah. You’re his wife, instead of forgiving your brother, he deliberately suppressed the matter. What does he mean by that? No matter how you put it, Zane is still your younger brother…”
“Dad.” Freya interrupted her father and said, “My mother only gave birth to me. Where did I get a younger brother?”
Leo Stone’s face stiffened and he coughed unnaturally. “Although your mother isn’t his, you have the same father…”
“My father doesn’t care about me. Why should I beg for his son?” Freya had already forgiven Leo Stone for what he had done, but blood ties still mattered to her.
She couldn’t help but care.
Leo Stone took a deep breath and didn’t get angry in the end. “I haven’t done anything wrong to you, have I?”
Freya looked up at the man with white hair on his temples. “Dad, you probably forgot how you obstructed me when I wanted to apply for medical school. I was going to a medical university and you wouldn’t even pay my tuition…”
“What’s so good about studying medicine?” Before she could finish speaking, Leo Stone immediately interrupted her. “Being a doctor is tiring and busy with low pay. I raised you so that you can find a good man and live comfortably for the rest of your life. You already have that now as Elijah’s wife as long as you put in some effort into it, I think he will definitely like and love you.”
For once, Freya couldn’t argue back.
“I can think for myself and know what I want. Dad, do you have a dream?” she asked him.
“Of course,” said Leo stone. “My grandfather was an ordinary person who only drove others around until your grandfather came along, without connections or resources it’s very difficult to achieve something great.”Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
Freya suddenly froze.
She only knew that Leo stone valued benefits above all else. He could use everyone, pushing themselves into fire pits if necessary. But he never understood her thoughts or what she wanted.
“I want our family name to be well-known, my daughter can also become a noble lady.” Knowing that Freya was starting to soften up again, Leo continued pushing harder.
Freya pursed her lips together, “Would you sacrifice me for your dreams?”
Leo spoke earnestly, “Why do you think it’s sacrificing yourself? Is Elijah ugly? Does he not have money? How many women outside want to marry him but don’t have the chance or opportunity? We have this chance, why not seize it? Even if you don’t marry Elijah, can you find someone better than him?”
Freya was speechless. She had heard that many women were crazy about him. But only after getting to know him did she realize how terrible his personality was. He simply wasn’t suitable for a life partner and only had a good appearance. Men like Elijah Silverton should be admired from afar and not approached too closely.
“Dad, you’re overestimating me. Even if you try your best to persuade me, I won’t help you. Yolanda Steele is the woman who destroyed my mom’s marriage. How could I possibly save her son?”
Freya stood up and said tiredly, “I’m exhausted now, please leave.”
She gave Leo Stone an ultimatum.
“No matter whether or not you admit it, Zane is your younger brother.”
Freya looked at her father and said firmly, “I refuse to acknowledge that he is my brother, what can you do about it?”
Leo showed signs of anger but restrained himself when he thought of their current situation. After all, when asking for help from others one must maintain some dignity.
“Tell me then, what will make you agree to help us?”
Freya lay down on the hospital bed with her eyes closed without saying another word.
Leo became infuriated and couldn’t hold back anymore.
“Freya! Get up!” he yelled. “What’s wrong with having a younger brother? If someone bullies or mistreats you in the future who will support you other than your blood-related siblings ? As for our marriage issue, I am sorry for what happened between your mother and me but I never abandoned either of you! Why can’t you think about helping me out?” Leo’s face turned red as he spoke these words.
He felt frustrated because there was no outlet for his anger; this feeling was too uncomfortable.
“You should think carefully about this.” Leo turned around as he walked out of the room. As soon as he reached the door, he stopped abruptly.
“Why are staying in hospital ? Are You sick ? Is it serious?” asked he.
Lying on the hospital bed, Freya slowly opened her eyes staring blankly at ceiling. Her voice sounded distant, “Dad, You finally care about me.”
Leo Stone felt guilty . He realized that he had neglected her daughter’s situation.
“Alright then. Let’s say its my fault. I made you marry someone whom you didn’t like, and live a life which you didn’t enjoy. It’s all my fault.” After speaking these words, Leo Stone left the ward.
Elijah happened to arrive at the door.
Leo Stone didn’t expect to meet him here and immediately greeted him with flattery, “Mr Silverton.”
Even though he was his father-in-law, he didn’t dare act like it and still had a timid demeanor.
Elijah’s face looked quite unpleasant, as if he had just heard the last thing Leo said to Freya. He ignored him and walked straight into the hospital room.
Leo Stone felt a bit embarrassed. After all, wasn’t he his father-in-law? Wasn’t there any face left for him?
Feeling frustrated from being stifled by his daughter earlier and then getting ignored by Elijah now, Leo Stone left in a huff.
Freya heard Leo’s greeting at the door and knew it was Elijah who came in, so she pretended to be asleep.
Elijah held back his anger as best as he could and asked her, “Freya, are you able to sleep?”
